The Early Years
When I was a child, my grandmother had a lot of back problems and because of this she was forced to undergo surgery on 2 separate occasions. Her back pain was relieved for a short period of time after the first surgery but after the second she wasn’t that fortunate. One day a friend of the family suggested that she go see a chiropractor to help her with the pain. Seeing the chiropractor gave her great relief from her pain and greatly improved the quality of her life over her remaining years.
When I was in my early 20’s I had a girlfriend whose brother was a chiropractor. At times she would complain that she felt lousy because she “had not been adjusted that week”. I thought that was ridiculous! I would say to her that, “I have never been adjusted and feel just fine”. I thought she was brainwashed or something; that she was dependent, and relied on something that created it’s own need, and people just didn’t need chiropractic care. I believed it was a cult or something of the sort ( I REALLY was not a believer). My mother had been going to chiropractors for years and my sister also went from time to time.
One day an annoying pain in my back that I had experienced every so often had returned. Only this time it was more bothersome than in the past. A friend of my mother happened to be visiting and suggested that I see her chiropractor Dr. Anthony Cama, who was located close to my home. He was 75 years old, semi-retired, and a great guy who shared lots of incredible experiences he had both professionally and personally. He helped me with my back pain and taught me about my body, how to stay healthy, and explained the value in and the place for chiropractic care.
Over the next couple of years I went to see Dr. Cama every 3 weeks or so – even when I was feeling pretty good. I learned that for me being adjusted and having my body in alignment helped me in several ways. I generally felt better physically receiving my regular adjustments and I truly believe that I got sick less often after beginning my regular chiropractic care. I believe that removing the stress from my body and keeping it balanced most of the time helped me to function at a better level and I feel that the quality of my life has been better since I met Dr. C.
I was AN ABSOLUTE NON-BELIEVER in chiropractic, clearly as I’ve come to learn, because I just wasn’t educated about it. I thought it was hokey and in the realm of something like faith healing. Fortunately for me and my patients I met Dr. Cama and learned the value, and MOST IMPORTANTLY the appropriate time and place for chiropractic care in the field of health care.
TODAY
As a chiropractor now practicing for 27+ years I still practice the philosophy I learned from Dr. C:
I spend the necessary time with my patients doing muscle work that helps the adjustments go comfortably and stay, or hold, longer than they would otherwise.
I listen to my patients. Even though I know all about the anatomy – every bone, muscle, tendon, ligament, nerve, and blood vessel, know how their bodies work, I always remember that they live in their bodies and their sense of what is going on is more valuable than just my education and training in helping them get well.
I work with my patients. Most people these days have challenges with their time and cannot keep a schedule of care that may be recommended. I make my recommendations but that is all I do. I do not preach to or try to pressure my patients because I know the time constraints that we all have. I would rather work WITH someone in the best way they can, than alienate them from care and have them go without.
I know the value of my work as a chiropractor and realize it has limitations and I don’t always get the results that I would hope to see. But I am straightforward and honest with my patients and do not hesitate to recommend they go elsewhere when it is in their best interest. There is no practitioner who can help everyone with their care – no internist, no orthopedist, no neurologist, no acupuncturist, no massage therapist, etc. absolutely no health care provider! I have found that being caring and honest with people who received no more than a consultation in my office has left a good impression that had them return with new problems in the future and also send in their friends and family when they had a problem.
